My pursuit of natural healing options began when I was a child, believe it or not. When I had a hurt shoulder I begged my mom to find me an osteopath, even though I have no idea how I knew what an osteopath was!
Despite that early interest, it wasn’t until I was 36 or 37 years old that I experienced my first acupuncture treatment. Like many people, I had been curious about it but didn’t know what it was good for, so I didn’t think to go. At the time I was looking to make a career change and was grieving. Actually, I was resisting grieving. My dad had died a year prior and I dove right into settling his estate rather than grieving. At the year anniversary, I realized I was depressed and unmotivated and stuck. A friend suggested I try acupuncture. I remember that the practitioner told me “You might feel a sense of falling back into yourself in the next few hours” and that’s exactly what happened! That day, after a year of grief, I regained a comfortable sense of myself, back in my own skin.
Another part of my early life gave me compassion for suffering and a sense of the importance of holism. When my younger sister was born doctors predicted that my sister would never walk or talk. Although she exceeded expectations, my sister suffered depression and mood disorders. My parents and myself were not separate from my sister's treatment and we received support from doctors and psychologists. Overall the experience of my family’s efforts for my sister helped me develop my compassion for other people’s struggles. I know first-hand that when you help one person you help the family members and the family unit.
I like understanding a deeper side of the world, feeling things, emotions or energy, tactile touches whether gardening or with a patient. While I can go quiet and meditate, I also like being physically active and exploring activities and new experiences here in Central Oregon.
